Ready for advice you didn’t know you needed?
Whenever we’re going through a transitional time or dealing with a stressful situation, we seek advice from people we trust.
Sometimes people give us unsolicited advice, and we take it because we don’t know any better. Or, we’re insecure about the situation we’re in so we take all the advice we can find. Have you ever thought about whether or not listening to that advice was worse than if you didn’t hear it at all?
I’m an emotional person. What helps me work through my problems is speaking them out loud with someone and working through them. Whether it’s my therapist, my parents, my sisters, friends, etc. I seek advice from others that I know and trust.
But have you ever done this, and the advice you got stresses you out 3000 times more after the conversation? Have you spoken to someone you love so much, but their advice threw you off?
A few weeks back, I bought a course from Dean Graziosi and Tony Robbins. It was a fantastic course, and there was a part in particular that stopped me in my tracks.
I remember I was watching this video where Dean was speaking, and I was outside on my deck with my dogs running around. I got distracted by something and walked over to make sure my dogs were ok, and Dean said: “Don’t take advice from the people who aren’t living the life you want to live.”
“Don’t take advice from the people who aren’t living the life you want to live.”
My jaw dropped, and I remember pausing my headphones and was like, “what the heck did he just say?”
Have you guys ever heard something and it resonates with you so much you can feel it in your gut? It makes you stop in your tracks.
So I went back to my computer and rewinded a few minutes to listen to that again. And Dean said:
“Why do we take advice from people who aren’t living the life we want to live? Don’t. Don’t take advice from people who aren’t living the life you want to live.”
Guys. I can’t even tell you how much that sentence changed my whole perspective on what people say about me, what feedback I’m given, and who I ask for advice from.
Have you ever had someone say something mean about you? Maybe it wasn’t advice, but if they’re not living the life YOU WANT TO LIVE, why should you listen?
If I want relationship advice, I’m not going to go to my single friend who has never had a relationship before. I’m going to go to my parents who have been happily married for 30 years.
It’s funny, after I watched this video from Dean, I got some questionable advice from someone in corporate America. Right after the conversation, I wasn’t even phased because I remembered “WHY SHOULD I LISTEN TO THIS PERSON. THEY AREN’T EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE TO LIVING THE LIFE I WANT TO LIVE,” and just like that; I moved on.
Now let me tell you, if this were a year ago, I probably would have tossed and turned all night thinking about that conversation and dreading my next conversation with this person. So, I encourage you to ask yourself next time you…
Are they living the life you want to live? If not, then peace out cub scout we do NOT want to hear what you have to say, and if we do have to listen to what you’re going to say, we’re not going to take it to heart.
